Artist's Statement
Pura Vida
This is a series of paintings inspired by my time in Costa Rica - one of the several places in the
world designated as a “Blue Zone” where people live longer and healthier than anywhere else
on earth. The country is also known as one of the happiest countries in the world because of
its “Pura Vida” lifestyle. “Pura Vida” is an attitude, an emotion, a happiness. It’s the essence of
a relaxed, stress free, simple way of looking and living life, and of being thankful for what one
has.
With these paintings, I turned to my graphic design background to create a visual vocabulary
of the shapes and colors of the natural beauty found in the country. For me, they are visually
happy paintings and signify “Pura Vida” lifestyle.
