GATO (Gary Alvin Grace)

Like Picasso’s defined periods, Gato’s signatures are not aliases, they are eras. Each represents a finite body of work that will never be recreated.

Artist's Statement

Gary Alvin Grace (Gato)

Gary Alvin Grace, known as Gato, is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores industry, rhythm, and transformation. Raised in Pittsburgh, he developed an early understanding of material and form, later refining his craft at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh while also honing his skills in sewing and design.

A former founder of the nationally recognized Posse clothing line, Gato now creates layered works using tar, oil, acrylic, airbrush, chalk, photography, and mixed media, blending industrial texture with structured, rhythmic composition.

His evolving signatures, from Gary Grace to Gagman, Sombrero Gato, Hat Cat, and now Gato, represent distinct creative periods, each tied to a finite body of work.

Gato is currently exhibiting at the Glynn Visual Arts Center’s Portman Gallery through May 1. His work has also been shown at the Jekyll Island Goodyear Cottage and Southeast Georgia Health System, with collectors across the United States and internationally.
